Round 2 Autosmart NQ Short Course Championships

1 July 2017 WSMC

Round 2 : Autosmart NQ Short Course Championships : 1 July 2017 : WSMC

Round 2 of the Autosmart NQSCC/Interclub was held at Whitsunday Motosports Club on Saturday 1st July.  This is the ninth year, Road Racing Association of Townsville, Far North Queensland Road Racing Club and Whitsunday Motosports Club have come together to compete in this three round series.  Riders all compete in their respective classes for a round win as well as an overall series win, but at the end of the series, all points gained for the respective clubs are tallied together to award the Interclub Shield to the Champion Club.  RRAT have been previous winners, but the FNQRRC guys are riding hard and super-fast to make sure their name is embossed on the shield for 2017.

Great racing in all classes on race day with most grids full to capacity. Racing was fast and very competitive all day. To name a few, the FNQRRC guys certainly had the monopoly on the 250 Production Class with Max Emeny #663, Shaune Williams #21 and Steve Fiddes #22 all taking the top podium spots. Apparently “Ride Like You Stole it” was their motto!  RRAT rider Morgan Barton #18 was on fire on his CBR150 in the Lites Class, overtaking most of the bigger capacity bikes in the combined Historics class. A crash and lack of foot peg or gear shifter in race 3 saw him drop back in the field but held on to finish the race, in his only gear, 4th, and win the overall trophy, with fellow RRAT member Jack Pemberton #55 coming in a very close second.

All the juniors certainly stepped up this round with some of the most competitive and close riding we have seen for a while, winners only being decided on the last corner for some racing.  Congratulations to RRAT Lucas Quinn #144 in the Supermoto Lites winning 4/4 of all the rounds. This young rider has slowly been nudging to the pointy end of the field over the last few months, but this weekend definitely put it altogether to come away with a perfect score.  WSMC Cody Van Bergen #23 was also another standout in the Junior Road Race taking home first place overall.  All our junior riders should be congratulated, they make us proud on and off the track every race day.  Not everyone can cross the line first, but PB’s are like a win for some of our guys, each taking away something positive for their next meet.

Snr Supermoto rider Andy McLiesh #217 showed us why he is the Aussie Champ on the weekend, taking all four wins in the class. He took to the front at his home track leaving the rest of the field to battle for second and third places.

All classes put on a great spectacle, but the best thing that comes out of this competition is the comradery on and off the track. This series gives all the riders and their families a great chance to race against different riders on different tracks and most importantly, catch up with some old friends and make new ones. A great example of this was our new Snr Supermoto rider Mat Henley #610, whose bike expired on the Friday practice.  One of the other SM guys got Mat’s spare bike down to the track early Friday night and with the assistance of the other Supermoto guys, Mat, Morgan, Dean and Matt, they all worked together late into the night to ensure the bike was ready for Saturday. I think the word epic was used to describe the job.  A great outcome. Plenty of happy riders at the end of the day, regardless of their scorecard.  Nice to see!

We’re all looking forward to October now for Rd 3, where the series will finish up at Mako in Mareeba hosted by FNQRRC.  Everyone will be looking forward to the updated points tally after Saturday’s racing. Can RRAT hang on to the lead or have FNQRRC bridged the gap, only to possibly take a home track advantage at the next meeting??? Who can tell but it will make for a super exciting last round.
